Calculating the Check Digit



Film master suppliers, on-site printing equipment, and bar coding software packages 

will calculate the check digit for you.



The check digit calculation (modulato 10 algorithm) is the same for EAN-13, EAN-8,

and TUN-14 numbers.





              





>   Perform the following calculation using the EAN-13 number in Figure 1-5 above.



1.	Starting with the first number on the right, add all the alter native numbers. 

Multiply the result by three.

                                         

                                                                       0 + 8 + 6 + 4 + 2 + 3     =   23  x  3    =       69 



2.   Starting with second number on the right, add all alternative numbers.

   

                                                                                          9 + 7 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 9       =       34



3.   Add the results of steps one and two.

 

                                                                                                                   Total      =     103



4.   Add the number needed to bring the total to the next multiple of ten.

      In this example, add seven.                                                                                             7
